Students in EDHEC's MSc in Strategic Management have just finished a particularly useful seminar entitled Career Options in Strategy, during which they were in direct contact with professionals from companies considered highly desirable in terms of recruitment possibilities.
This seminar complimented and extended the work carried out by the EDHEC Careers Centre, providing insights into the present opportunities available to MSc graduates in the employment market. It also gave an overview the strategic mission which the different sectors might give to a recently hired graduate from the programme and advice as to the specific skills set needed to satisfy the expectations of the different sectors/professions.
Company representatives were invited on campus to speak about career options with regards to a variety of sectors. Companies included France Telecom's Orange, La Farge, NeoStrat and Candesic, two of which also interviewed pre-selected students with a view to hiring.
Outside of the company interventions, students were given time devoted to preparation for the job search, including advice on how to prepare for the typical employment interviews in such specialised professions as consulting. These interviews are often of the same nature and often involve the handling of a case study for example so techniques to handle these well can be learned. Mark Kitten, an independent consultant currently working with Candesic, offered expert interview advice and explained what it was like to work in the strategy cell of a major consulting firm, based on his time at Mc Kinsey.
