MSc Strategic Management - Module 9: Supply Chain and Total Quality Management

OBJECTIVES

The main objective is to help participants to develop and implement total-quality and supply chain programmes. This covers total quality diagnosis, methods and tools. This course also provides up-to-date methods in supply-chain management, linking new technologies and logistics in the context of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) projects.

COURSE CONTENT

PART 1: SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

This course provides an introduction to the concepts, selected methods and tools useful in understanding the management of a firm's operations. It seeks to show how day to day operations contribute to the creation of competitive advantage by suggesting models and processes for maximizing the value of various aspects of the business operation.

At the end of this course, the student should be able to understand the important role operations plays in a business and its relation to the other functional areas, as well as be able to analyze a range of operations decision situations and apply the appropriate decision-making techniques.

Specific objectives include:

To develop a general managerial perspective on the role of the supply chain management

To familiarize the student with the issues confronting managers

To provide the student with vocabulary, concepts, methods and tools to deal with these issues

To expose the student to the strategically important role of integrated planning and execution in management.

PART 2: TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT

Quality is often associated with bureaucracy, paper work and other constraints. As a consequence, for many companies it is often far from being a priority. However, it is significant to note that most of the top 500 firms in the world have led major quality projects proving that no firm can be successful without quality. Quality is not additional work; it is just part of it. Quality is pure management

This part of the course will enable the participants to develop a unique and broad understanding of quality. It aims at providing the students with a thorough knowledge of what quality is and how it can be applied within firms. At the end of it, students should be able to manage basic quality projects using quality methods and tools.
